Rumpus makes the Caldon (and the Cheshire Ring) - September 2003 - The Pictures (Part 1)

The voyage begins - Susan opens the drawbridge at Festival Park

"Planet Lock was easier, though it was sad to see that the (very well done) hard landscaping was weed-grown and badly neglected, as was the house next to the bridge - restoration project, anyone?"

This new bridge has been given a "vintage" look..............

........... which is more than can be said for this really naff "palm tree"!!!

A shame really, as the canalside building conversion is really quite good!

"Which side do I go, Brian??" "Either!" (The remains of a railway swing bridge near Endon Basin)

I wondered what was making the funny tracks on the towpath.................

Cheddleton Flint Mill looks very much as it must have done when it was in use.

Froghall Tunnel was TIGHT...........

........... VERY TIGHT!

Cherry Eye Bridge is an attractive shape.

"...........it’s odd to see the platform shelter at Consall Forge station, which is cantilevered over the canal - the building’s fine but there’s NO PLATFORM!!!"

Hazlehurst Aqueduct takes the Leek Branch over the main line.

"That" bridge - the one the artist was looking for in the Winter 2003 series of "Waterworld" on TV

Back on the T & M, Middleport Pottery reminds us of what this area is all about.

The light at the end of Harecastle Tunnel..............

.......... and the northern portal.

A typical Macclesfield Canal towpath turnover bridge

A fine wooden cruiser - a rare survivor, these days.

Bosley Locks are very picturesque.................

At least we had no hassle at Bridge 49!

This fine mill overlooks the canal at Macclesfield

I've seen gardens on top of boat before, but CONIFERS???????

The "Jack-wide" at Higher Poynton - a relic of colliery subsidence in the 19th century.

I LIKE little boats - this day hire boat included!

The North Cheshire Cruising Club's moorings at High Lane has "garages" for boats.........

...... and there's one left on the main line.............

..... just before you get to the end of the Macc at Marple!

In Marple, even the street lights reflect the canal connection.

What a wonderful spot for an office - half way down the Marple flight! Don't think I'd get much work done, though.........

Crossing Marple aqueduct, with the rail viaduct in the background.

To paraphrase Pearson: "The junction at Ashton is overlooked by a tall chimney with a "crown" on top, which has recently been bought by a "chimney anorak". Makes canal boating feel almost sane!"

Waiting for assistance at the top of the Rochdale Nine - this area is about to become VERY desireable!
